Daisenji Temple: Sakyamuni Buddha Triad

JAPAN, Hyogo, Kobe; Kamakura period (1185-1333);Ink and color on silk; 141.2 x 70.8 cm
This 13th century Triad was listed an Important Cultural Property in 1917. The central figure, Sakyamuni Buddha, is surrounded by a nimbus and a large aureole, and sits on a lotus throne beneath a canopy. Sakyamuni wears a monastic robe with flowing folds and forms a mudra with his right hand. On the right, Manjusri Bodhisattva holds a ruyi (wish-fulfilling talisman) and rides a lion. On the left, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva holds a lotus flower and sits on the back of an elepant. The two Bodhisattvas face each other, forming a triangular arrangement with Sakyamuni at the top.
