Pitalkhora Cave 4: Guardians
INDIA, Maharashtra, Aurangabad; circa 2nd century BCE; Stone
These two guardians flank the cave entrance. They are almost the same height as the door and both have smiles on their faces. The style of artwork is reminiscent of statues from the Sunga period (circa 185-75 BCE). Both figures wear armor and hold weapons in the hand nearest to the door, with the other hand placed on the waist. They command a powerful presence, guarding the door with legs apart. |
