Sanchi Stupa 1: Life of the Buddha - King Bimbisara Visiting the Buddha

The relief is located on the front of the south column on the eastern gateway.
Prince Siddhartha visited the city of Rajagriha during his quest for enlightenment and while he was there, he promised King Bimbisara (reigned circa 543–491 BCE) that he would return if he was successful. Thus the Buddha did, having converted the three Kasyapa brothers and their followers on the way. While the Buddha was staying in the woods on the outskirts of the city, King Bimbisara came to visit him.
The column panel is traditionally interpreted as depicting Rajagriha, where the citizens crowd the balconies to watch the king's retinue pass through on horses and elephants. The king's chariot leaves the city gates at the bottom of the relief, preceded by musicians. The upper left corner shows a throne that is said to symbolize the Buddha. Below the throne figures in royal turbans pay respect. |
