Sakyamuni Buddha

CHINA; Sui dynasty (581–618), dated 582; Commissioned by Huijing; Stone; H: 50.7 cm; Freer Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., USA
The Buddha is seated cross-legged on a square base. The hair above the tranquil face is smooth and has a flattened usnisa. There is a plain circular nimbus behind the head. The monastic robe covers both shoulders and hangs opened at the front. The right arm is raised but too damaged to identify its purpose. The front of the base has a low relief of a squatting warrior bearing a lotus. The inscription on either side of the warrior dates the statue to 582 and states that it was commissioned by the monk Huijing.
