Bingling Temple Cave 168: Bodhisattva and Mahakasyapa

CHINA, Gansu, Linxia; Tang dynasty (618-907); Stone
These statues are located along the north wall. The 1.55 m high Mahakasyapa on the left looks aged and has a thin, shrunken physique to reflect his ascetic practice. The figure wears monastic robes and stands upon a lotus pedestal with palms joined.
On the right, a 2 m high Bodhisattva sits in relaxation posture on a raised throne, with the hair tied in a high topknot. The figure wears a necklace, armlets, bracelets, a sash draped diagonally across the chest, and a lower garment.
