Vessel

INDONESIA; Central Java period (circa 7th–13th century), 11th–12th century; Bronze; Diameter: 18.6 cm; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA
It is thought that this bronze water vessel was made in the 11th to 12th century during the Central Java period. It was used to hold consecrated water.
Between the rim and body, there is an extended wide band decorated with a series of pearls. The body is elaborately decorated with cloud patterns framing five cameos featuring mythical animals, and four cameos with scrolling floral designs. The base is adorned with upright lotuses, which were commonly seen on Indonesian vessels. Originally there was a lid, but it is now missing.
