Donghwasa Temple Biroam Hermitage:Panels with Buddha Triads

These four panels were recovered from the three-tier pagoda at Biroam Hermitage in Donghwasa Temple. Similar to images found on reliquaries excavated from Hwangnyongsa Temple and Anapji Pond in Gyeongju, they are presumed to be works of the early Goryeo dynasty (918-1392).
Although the function of these repousse panels is unknown, there are four holes on each side which suggest that they were once connected to each other. Stylistically and in size, they are all similar. An image of a seated Buddha in full lotus position upon a Sumeru throne appears on each panel. The Buddhas have nimbuses and mandorlas. Their detailed monastic robes cover both shoulders, and their hands perform different mudras in each panel. Attendant Bodhisattva stand on inverted lotus pedestals on either side of the Buddhas with palms joined in reverence. Above all figures is a canopy. |
