Mogao Cave 17: Life of the Buddha
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 77.5 x 19 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
The four scenes painted on this 9th century banner depict the aftermath of Prince Siddhartha's departure from the comfort of the royal palace. A hexagonal pavilion and a fenced lotus pond are painted at the bottom of the banner. Above them, King Suddhodana is shown sending messengers in search of the prince. Moving upwards, a messenger carrying a banner rides on a brown horse. At the top of the banner, a messenger returns to the king, unsuccessful in his quest to find the prince. Blank cartouches are painted beside each of the scenes. The triangular headpiece is painted with landscapes and buildings. Except for the white areas, most of the colors remain intact. |
