Wat Yai Inthraram Ordination Hall: Mahajanaka Jataka

THAILAND, Chonburi; Bangkok period (1782–present), circa 1801–1850
Located in the ordination hall of Wat Yai Inthraram in Chonburi, Thailand, this mural depicts a scene from the Mahajanaka Jataka, Pali Jataka No. 539. The story describes the Buddha's previous life as Prince Mahajanaka, who endured many misfortunes but remained determined to regain his father's kingdom. When he was sailing back to his home, the ship was hit by a great storm and sank. The prince floated in the ocean for seven days until the heavenly being Manimekhala, moved by his perseverance, carried him to safety.
The ship is painted on the left side of the mural. The captain stands atop the bow, peering through a telescope, while the crew frantically attempts to save the ship. Some sailors fall into the ocean and are devoured by monstrous sea creatures. Mahajanaka floats on the waves on the right. He turns back to look up at Manimekhala, who descends from the heavens to rescue him. Both figures wear pointed headdresses and gold clothing. The light colors in the mural give it the appearance of an Ayutthaya Kingdom (circa 1350-1767) artwork.
