Kizil Cave 175: Guhyapadavajra

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; circa 6th–7th century
This illustration is located in the niche of the right wall in the rear corridor. Guhyapadavajra is seated with legs crossed at the ankles on a green cushion. He holds a whisk in his raised left hand and a vajra in his right hand. On his back is a pair of triangular wings, indicating his ability to fly. Flame patterns fill the background. Guhyapadavajra wears a white upper garment and purple dhoti, and his clothing has a dark brown trim with golden lines. A small offering monk kneels on the ground in the lower left of the illustration, with palms joined in reverence.
