Qing Imperial Palace: Sutra Box

This wooden sutra box was created during the rule of Emperor Qianlong (reigned 1736-1795) and was originally kept in the Qing Imperial Palace. It is lacquered in red and brown and measures 26 cm long, 25.2 cm wide, and 28 cm high. On the lid, there is a rectangular strip inscribed with the title Surangama Sutra, penned by the emperor. The rest of the lid is covered in wavy patterns.
The sides of the box are decorated with carvings of the Buddha sitting on a lotus throne and teaching the Dharma. The Buddha is located at the top and accompanied by Bodhisattvas and disciples. There is a canopy above and a stupa on either side. On the left and right beneath the throne, there is a gathering of disciples, Arhats, and Heavenly Kings. At the center, from the throne downwards, there is a cutaway effect which creates an impression of depth. |
