Mogao Cave 17: Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 76.5 x 27 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This late 9th century painting portrays Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva wearing an ornate headdress, armlets, bracelets, and a string ornament. Stoles are wrapped around the upper body and draped over the arms. Curving lines and washes of color accentuate the folds in the long dhoti. The Bodhisattva holds up a red vase containing a lotus flower with the right hand. A red and green nimbus surrounds the head. The canopy at the top of the picture is decorated with hanging tassels and flaming jewels. There is some damage to the bottom and sides of the painting. |
