Shizhongshan Grottoes Niche 2: Master Gepi

Located to the left of King Geluofeng (reigned 748-779) in Niche 2, Master Gepi sits upright in full lotus position under a canopy. His head has been severely damaged. He wears a loose monastic robe over another inner robe, and his left hand holds chanting beads in front of his chest, while the right hand is put in front of the abdomen. Master Gepi, the younger brother of King Geluofeng, practiced Vajrayana Buddhism and was highly regarded within the royal household. During his time, he influenced the military and political decisions of the Nanzhao Kingdom.
