Feilai Peak Caves Niche 90: Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva

Located on the southern bank of Lengquan (Cold Fountain) Stream, this arched niche contains a carving of Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva seated in full lotus position on a raised throne. The most notable feature of the carving is the Bodhisattva’s tall headdress, which has been intricately carved with floral patterns surrounding a central vase enclosed in an oval. The Bodhisattva has long arched eyebrows, partially closed eyes, a small mouth, and an urna on the forehead. An outer robe drapes down from the shoulders and an inner garment is tied around the upper waist. One hand is raised holding a lotus, while the other is placed on the knee. The lines of the carving are precise and the detailing is realistic; this is particularly evident in the folds of the robe and the embellishments on the headdress. |
