Hongtong: Seated Bodhisattva
CHINA, Shanxi, Linfen; Song dynasty (960–1279); Wood; H: 92 cm; Shanghai Museum, China
Unearthed from Hongtong in Linfen, this Bodhisattva is seated in the posture of royal ease, and wears a rich headdress fronted with a seated image of Amitabha Buddha and rounded side ornaments from which ribbons trail over the shoulders. A jeweled necklace with wheel ornament and pendants is worn. There is an urna between the sharply defined eyebrows, and the eyes are lowered in the calm face. A stole is draped across the shoulders and loops about the right arm where it rests on the raised knee. The gilded clothing reflects the style of the Song dynasty (960–1279). |
