Three Buddhas

THAILAND; 13th century; Bronze; Bangkok National Museum, Thailand
This sculpture originated from central Thailand and exhibits the Lopburi style. The seated figures are believed to represent the Buddhas of the Past, Present, and Future. They are similar in design and appearance, wearing a combination of pointed leaf-crowns, earrings, and necklaces, combined with monastic robes that leave the right shoulder bare. All are in full lotus position with right hands in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. The Buddhas occupy arched niches rimmed with flames, above which rise the leafy branches of Bodhi trees. The high platform supporting this composition is carved with bands of floral and foliate patterns.
