Plaque with Standing Buddha

THAILAND; 13th century; Silver; H: 58 cm; National Gallery of Australia, Canberra
This crowned standing Buddha was made from silver repousse and measures 58 cm high, 15.5 cm wide, with a thickness of 1 cm.
The crown is tall with pointed, leaf-shape prongs and a band which fits neatly on to the head. The forehead is prominent and the eyebrows join at the bridge of the nose. Protruding eyes are cast downward below the half-closed eyelids, and the nose is wide and the lips are full. The Buddha has a strong neck which is adorned with an exquisite necklace. A robe is draped over both shoulders and the lower garments are tied at the waist and form a wave pattern. The Buddha forms the vitarka (teaching) mudra with his right hand and the left hand hangs down by his side.
