Duldur-Aqur: Head of a Bodhisattva

CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; 5th–6th century; Clay; H: 24 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
The Bodhisattva's features are centralized on the large face, and despite the deterioration are easily discernible. The hairline, brows, mustache, eyelids, and pupils are painted in either red or black, which is a characteristic of sculptures from Central Asia. The hair has been pressed into a diamond pattern, and more braided locks fall down the sides of the head. The hair and ear appear to have been pre-molded and later applied to the head.
