Jingdezhen: Statuette of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

This statuette of Avalokitesvara was excavated from Songjing, Changzhou in 1978. It was created in Jingdezhen. Avalokitesvara wears a high headdress containing an image of Amitabha Buddha, with two sets of beads hanging down to the shoulders on each side. The Bodhisattva has a high forehead, narrow eyes, a thin nose, and a small mouth. The chest is decorated with a heavy necklace. A brown inner robe and a green outer robe cover both shoulders and fall loosely down over the abdomen. The hands are held in the dhyana (meditation) mudra. The Bodhisattva sits on a rocky base with a lotus flower between the bare feet. |
