Kumtura Cave 16: Illustration of the Amitayurdhyana Sutra
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; 7th–8th century
Situated on the south wall of the main chamber, this mural is based on the Amitayurdhyana Sutra and features figures and architecture in the style of the Central Plains. A depiction of a portion of the Western Pure Land is found in the middle of the mural. There are Bodhisattvas seated upon lotuses and towering buildings and pavilions with green tiled roofs. A small double-reed wind instrument, a long flute, and other musical instruments fly amidst the colorful clouds.
The large mural originally featured depictions of the story of King Ajatasatru on the left, and the Sixteen Contemplations on the right. |
