Zhucheng: Seated Buddha

CHINA, Shandong, Weifang; Northern Qi dynasty (550–577), dated 552; Commissioned by Jiben; Limestone; H: 115 cm; Zhucheng Municipal Museum, Shandong, China
The sculpture was unearthed from an excavation that was carried out from 1988 to 1990 at Zhucheng. It depicts a Buddha seated in a stiff half lotus posture upon a throne and backed by a mandorla. The upright body gives the impression of a standing figure, largely due to the sleeves of the monastic robe that hangs straight down, rather than being displaced by contact with the lap. An inner robe is visible beneath the loose monastic robe that is tied at the chest. The excess material drapes over the throne in a stylized and carefully arranged manner. The mandorla has been damaged so little can be discerned from it. Remnants of feet on the base makes it clear that there were originally four other figures upon it. A long inscription is visible along the front of the base.
