Mogao Cave 17: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Silver on red silk; 183.2 x 58 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
In this painting from the second half of the 9th century, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is shown standing on a lotus pedestal, wearing a crown decorated with a Buddha image. The Bodhisattva has a round face, arched eyebrows, and narrowed eyes. Three lines are painted on the neck. A necklace and string ornaments hang over the chest; a stole hovers around the arms and hangs down beside the lower body. The left hand forms a mudra and the right hand hangs down naturally. The nimbus consists of three rings. An inscription on the upper right pays homage to the Bodhisattva.
