Bazhong Rock Carvings Northern Niche 7: Apsaras

CHINA, Sichuan, Bazhong; Tang dynasty (618-907)
These apsaras are carved at the top of Northern Niche 7. The figures are depicted as if flying and are divided into two groups facing one another. They are adorned with necklaces, jewels in their hair, and other ornaments. Their long skirts are fastened with broad belts, while their upper bodies are bare. Each apsara is surrounded by auspicious clouds and is either holding a tray, spreading flowers, or dancing with stoles.
