Arhat

CHINA; Dated 1916; By Chen Shizeng; Ink and color on paper; National Art Museum of China, Beijing
This painting is Chen Shizeng's interpretation of an older artwork by Shitao. An inscription dates the painting to 1916. The bearded Arhat wears a white monastic robe draped over his right shoulder. Seated on a rock by the water, the Arhat gazes down at the stream near his feet. There is a faint reflection of the moon in the water, and plants grow around the rocks. In the upper portion of the painting, moonlight shines through dark swirling clouds depicted with swift strokes of light ink.
