Mogao Cave 17: Warrior

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907); Ink and color on silk; 64 x 18.5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
Found in Mogao Cave 17, this late 9th century banner is bright and colorful. The warrior stands on lotus pedestals, clenching his left hand in a fist and holding a Dharma instrument in the right hand. White ribbons attached to the headdress flutter within the flaming nimbus. Stoles and ornaments cover the body. The chest, legs, and arms are painted with gradations of color to highlight the muscles, emphasizing the strength of this Dharma protecting warrior. The painting on the headpiece is badly damaged. A strip of patterning runs along the bottom portion of the banner.
