Peshawar: Seated Buddha

PAKISTAN, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar; circa 2nd–3rd century; Schist; H: 52 cm; Museum of Asian Art, Berlin, Germany
The plain nimbus of this Gandharan Buddha frames intricately waved hair that has been arranged into a flattened topknot. An urna is located directly between the eyebrows in the rounded face. The eyes are half opened and the bow-like mouth below the straight nose is turned down. The monastic robe covers both shoulders and falls in a pattern of diagonal folds to below the crossed legs. Both arms of the ancient statue display damage. The knees of the seated figure project beyond the cushions of a low throne. The material covering the cushions folds at the edges with a scrolled pattern running down the center. A pairs of lions are crouched diagonally at either side of the throne.
