Sarnath: Standing Buddha

INDIA, Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi; circa 3rd century; Sandstone; H: 218 cm; Archaeological Museum, Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, India
s damage, the rest of the statue is in good condition. The figure's right hand forms the abhaya (fearlessness) mudra while the left hand is clenched into a fist at hip level. The monastic robe is different from Gupta period (circa 320–550) sculptures in that only the left shoulder is covered. The belt of the undergarment, despite being underneath the robe, is clearly discernible. The edge of the robe drapes down the left wrist to hang in an orderly manner. This is quite rare for statues found at Sarnath since the folds are usually unequal in length.
