Unearthed from Java, this statue shows a blend of artistic styles.The tall headdress is topped with a jewel, commonly seen in East Javanese statues, while the double lotus throne with its alternating petals and heavy top side was a style predominantly seen in the 8th century Srivijaya Empire (circa 7th–13th century).
The Buddha’s slender upper body is adorned with a large amount of jewelry, as well as a chest belt and a belt around the waist from which ornaments hang down to the throne. The figure is in half lotus position with the right hand in bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. A tall conical crown partially surrounded by a damaged openwork nimbus bordered with flames is on the Buddha’s head. |
