Mogao Cave 276: Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Mahakasyapa

This painting of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Mahakasyapa is part of a Dharma teaching illustration on the south wall of the cave. Avalokitesvara stands on a lotus pedestal and wears a headdress adorned with a Buddha image. The Bodhisattva holds a vase in the left hand and a willow branch in the right, both common symbols in Avalokitesvara images from the Sui dynasty (581-618) onward. Mahakasyapa is dressed in simple monastic robes, and holds a flower and a small alms bowl. His wrinkled face and slight build are indicative of his wisdom and experience. The colors of the painting have faded over time. |
