Heavenly King

Heavenly King

CHINA; Five Dynasties (907–960); Stone; H: 72 cm; Shanghai Museum, China
The figure depicts a Heavenly King who wears full body armor. A close-fitting helmet is worn with ear guards formed by flaps that are turned downwards. The figure’s right hand rests on a knee, while the object originally held in the left hand is now missing. The formidable figure sits upon the demons whose bodies are penned and distorted due to the square structure of the stand. As a guardian of the Dharma, the Heavenly King’s power is further manifested in his frowning face and bulky body.
