The ritual banner is displayed on or near a Buddhist altar. It was one of the treasures presented to the imperial court by Horyuji Temple. Although most banners are made of fabric, this one is made of gilt bronze. It was listed as a National Treasure in 1964.
The head of the banner features a square canopy with drapery decorated in openwork lotus petals. The body of the banner consists of six openwork gilt bronze panels which are connected by chains. Images of the Buddha, Bodhisattvas, apsaras, clouds, shrines, and scroll leaf patterns are found at the front and the back of the banner.
The first section of the banner depicts Bodhisattvas and heavenly musicians making offerings to the Buddha. The surrounding space is filled with flowers, leaves, clouds, and honeysuckle patterns. |
