Andhra Pradesh: Head of a Buddha

INDIA, Andhra Pradesh; circa 2nd century; Marble; H: 21 cm; Guimet Museum of Asian Art, Paris, France
The head was discovered on the banks of the Krishna River. It dates from the early centuries of the Common Era at a time when the art of nearby Amaravati was at its height. The Buddha has an oval-shaped face, large curls, and an almost flat usnisa. Apart from the urna and elongated ear lobes, the rest of the features are realistic, most likely displaying characteristics of the local Dravidian population. Greek styled statuary introduced to the area has clearly influenced the naturalistic treatment of the face.
