Erfo Temple Rock Carvings: Bodhidharma
CHINA, Sichuan, Hechuan; Southern Song dynasty (1127-1279), dated 1177; Stone; H: 2.73 m
This carving is located on the south cliff within Erfo Temple. Bodhidharma stands barefoot with folded arms, clad in a hooded cloak that completely covers his body. His round face is tilted upwards, and he wears a pair of round earrings. Lightly engraved flowers and faint remnants of mineral green and indigo paint are visible on his robe. An inscription on the right beside the figure states that it was carved by a Buddhist devotee in 1177. |
