Wolchulsan: Seated Buddha

This Buddha sculpture, carved in relief on a granite boulder, is located on a peak on Wolchulsan. The carving is thought to date to the early Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) and was listed as National Treasure No. 144 in 1972.
　 The Buddha is seated in full lotus position within a niche, surrounded by a flaming mandorla that encloses the decorated lotus nimbus behind the head. The incised robe leaves the right shoulder bare while the right hand displays the bhumisparsa (earth-touching) mudra. A small, 87 cm high image of Sudhana is found to the lower left of the niche.
