This statue is likely from the Kashmir region as it has been created in the Kashmiri style with typical features such as silver inlay for the eyes and urna. The Buddha's earlobes extend to the broad shoulders and are hollowed. The left hand holds the edge of the monastic robe, arranged to leave the right shoulder bare, while the right hand is in abhaya (fearlessness) mudra. Webbing, which is a Buddha characteristic, can clearly be seen between the fingers. The figure sits in full lotus posture on a cushioned throne. A dwarf between the guardian lions lends his support to the carved columns at the corners. The nimbus and aureole behind are edged with openwork flames that also surround the stupa at the apex. |
