Huayan Lower Temple Bhagavad Sutra Hall: Bodhisattvas

CHINA, Shanxi, Datong; Liao dynasty (907–1125),dated 1038; Clay; H: 1.5 m
These elegant Bodhisattvas are located before Dipamkara Buddha on the north side of the Bhagavad Sutra Hall. They have hair tied in topknots and secured by a headdress. Their carefully modeled garments are simple and they wear no jewelry except for a bracelet. Both figures are seated in the posture of royal ease on lotus thrones and appear to be listening to the Buddha’s teachings. The round-faced Bodhisattva facing frontwards has the left elbow resting on the raised knee and the left wrist grasped by the right hand. The other Bodhisattva turns the body to look upward with one hand supporting the body.
