North Xiangtangshan Grotto 9: Seated Buddha

This Buddha statue in Grotto 9 is located in the west side niche of the central pillar. The seated Buddha is the largest statue in the North Xiangtangshan Grottoes. The Buddha has a slight smile on his rounded face and is seated in full lotus position on a Sumeru throne. The figure is gilded, and wears a monastic robe that covers both shoulders. The hands are missing, so the mudras can no longer be identified. Exquisitely carved nimbus, aureole, and mandorla are visible behind the statue.
