LAOS, Vientiane; 17th–18th century; Bronze
The statue is located within what is currently a museum dedicated to religion. The Buddha stands on a double tiered octagonal pedestal with a stylized lotus flower design. Small, pointed curls cover the Buddha’s head, framing a serene face with closed eyes. The rounded contours of the body are a stylistic trait of statues from the Sukhothai Kingdom (circa 1238–1438), which once included the Laotian area. The figure wears a tightly fitted, plain monastic robe that allows the body and the belted skirt to show through.The edges of the hem are decorated with stylized cloud patterns and flare out at the sides. The arms hang down beside the body, a posture rarely seen in Buddhist art of Southeast Asia. |
