Seated Bodhisattva

This finely sculpted statue has characteristics often seen in sculptures from the Five Dynasties period (907–960). The Bodhisattva has a high topknot and wears elaborate jewelry around the neck. A stole wraps around the figure's shoulders and flares outward from the elbows. The clenched right hand is slightly raised, while the empty left hand is held at the waist. The Bodhisattva sits in half lotus position on a pedestal that is encased in a double layer of lotus petals that roll outward at the tips. The pedestal is positioned on a six-pointed base, mounted in turn on a hexagonal stand. The mandorla has been lost. |
