Kuqa: Reliquary Vessel
CHINA, Xinjiang, Aksu; 7th–8th century; Earthenware; H: 30 cm; Xinjiang Regional Museum, Urumqi, Xinjiang, China
This earthenware reliquary was excavated from Kuqa, which once flourished as a Buddhist center. When the reliquary was found, it was broken into pieces and had to be reassembled.
The reliquary has a narrow base and curves outward to form a wide shoulder. The concave lid fits neatly on to the rim of the reliquary, and there is a circular knob in the center. The reliquary is undecorated and has a simple form with an emphasis on its function. |
