CHINA, Liaoning, Chaoyang; Liao dynasty (907–1125);Silver and copper alloy; H: 22.1 cm;Beita Museum, Chaoyang, Liaoning, China
These four Bodhi trees were recovered from the heavenly palace of Chaoyang North Pagoda in 1988. They are made of silver, and each tree has 16 branches in four layers. Each branch has compact leaves in the shape of lotus petals. The leaves are arranged in three tiers in a radiating pattern, with raised dots resembling Bodhi seeds at the center.
The trunks and branches are attached with silver wire. The circular trunks are coated with silver leaf and stand on an octagonal copper alloy base that widens at the bottom. |
