Qigxin: Head of a Heavenly Being
CHINA, Xinjiang, Bayingolin; 6th–7th century; Clay; H: 10.5 cm; British Museum, London, United Kingdom
This is another of the commonly featured heads found at Qigxin. The eyes are set level and look straight ahead. A differentiating feature of this head is the large floral earring remaining on one of the ears, which is same in design as other accessories found on other statues. The hair is also pulled into a long braid and wound into a topknot. The modeling has been created by the pressure of tools into the clay. |
