Mogao Cave 277: Animal Pairs Encircled by Pearls

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Sui dynasty (581–618)
In Cave 277, there are double-recessed niches in each of the four walls, and the outer edges of all the niches are decorated with this pattern. It consists of pairs of winged horses encircled by strings of white pearls. The pairs of horses face each other, and between them are honeysuckle flowers and leaves. The images are mainly colored in blue, white, and red pigments, and there are subtle variations among them.
