PAKISTAN, Punjab, Taxila; circa 5th century; Plaster; H: 23 cm; Taxila Museum, Pakistan
Excavated from the Dharmarajika Stupa at Taxila, this sculpture depicts a Bodhisattva in secular style with a headband. A curly fringe shows beneath the headband and long locks of hair tumble to the neck. An urna is in the center of the forehead. The eyebrows are thin and arc to define the base of the nose. The eyes are lowered and serene. The three lines signifying a great person are visible on the neck.
