Life of the Buddha - Bathing of Prince Siddhartha

The story on this relief is related in the Sutra of Cause and Effect in the Past and Present. Prince Siddhartha is located at the center with a nimbus about his head. The prince stands on a three-legged stool attended by kneeling ladies-in-waiting. The naga kings, Nanda and Upananda, are above the prince, who each hold a water vase, one filled with warm water, the other with cool water. Beside a Corinthian column to the far right, the turbaned Sakra joins his palms in reverence. The damaged figure on the far left is Brahma. On either side of a canopy are two more defaced figures, one of which wears a necklace. |
