Votive Tablet

THAILAND; 13th century; Bronze; H: 10.2 cm; Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena, California, USA
This lotus bud-shaped votive tablet contains three rows of Buddhas. All nine are seated Buddhas carved with similar features, including a high usnisa, protruding eyes, thick lips, and long ears hanging down to the shoulders. The Buddhas sit on lotus thrones and perform different mudras. The figures with arms raised flanking the central Buddha on the middle and lower registers are thought to be Bodhisattvas. There are three stupas depicted in the upper register and two stupas down each side, and a bead pattern runs along the rim of the tablet.
