Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva
CHINA; Sui dynasty (581–618), dated 597; Commissioned by Liu Guangda; Gilt bronze; H: 26.6 cm;Shanghai Museum, China
The figure stands on a pedestal that is supported on a four-legged stand of a type first seen around 518 to 524 during the Northern Wei dynasty. This type of stand remained popular during the Sui dynasty (581-618), but was seldom found later. The figure wears a headdress and a stole, while the lower body is covered in a thin skirt. The right arm is raised to the chest. There are flame patterns about the petal-shaped mandorla, which encloses a lotus nimbus. An inscription on the side of the stand states Liu Guangda dedicated the statue in 597. |
