Mogao Cave 361: Niche Ceiling
CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Tang dynasty (618–907)
The back (west) wall niche has a truncated pyramidal ceiling. The center of the ceiling is painted with floral medallions, while its four slopes feature Buddha images. The rectangular center is divided into a grid of eight squares in two rows of four. Each square features a similar octagonal motif, with a goose in the center holding a garland in its beak. The goose is encircled by a bead string and a flower petal border. The geese alternate directions in each row, and each square is framed by floral patterns. |
