Mogao Cave 288: Warrior

CHINA, Gansu, Dunhuang; Western Wei dynasty (535–556)
This image is located on the lower west side of the central pillar. The yaksa has striking features, with a round face, large eyes, and a high-bridged nose. The figure has a broad physique and stands in a fierce, dynamic pose, with the left leg flexed in a half-squatting position and the right leg extended out to the side. A silk stole is looped around the arms and billows around the figure. The swift and powerful movements indicated by the figure blend with the sense of softness in the flowing fabric to create a balanced aesthetic.
