Reliquary Container

CHINA; Qing dynasty (1644–1911); Wood with lacquer and gold; H: 11 cm; Palace Museum, Beijing, China
This wooden reliquary container is round with an indented waist. It is lacquered in red and covered in patterns of lotus blossoms and intertwining lotus stems. The relics are enfolded in a yellow slip of paper and then wrapped in a finely woven yellow silk cloth. The slip of paper indicates that two relics of Dipamkara Buddha and two relics of Kasyapa Buddha were gifted to Emperor Qianlong (reigned 1736-1795) of the Qing dynasty by the Eighth Dalai Lama in 1773 and in 1775 respectively. These relics were later enshrined in a Buddha hall within the imperial palace.
